Difficulties Encountered Migrating from iOS to Android
After having used iOS exclusively for many years, I kept a log of difficulties I personally encountered while migrating to Android 14.
- If you dismiss the prompt to finish setup and copy data from an iPhone by cable, there is no way to get it back except by factory reset.
- 60 Hz and 90 Hz display modes display colors slightly differently, resulting in rapid flashing that’s especially noticeable with dark backgrounds.
- My MVNO won’t let me access my account until I set up a second factor with a phone that I don’t trust yet.
- Google Calendar doesn’t support subscribing to calendars protected by passwords.
- Google Calendar processes calendar time zone information differently.
- Wireless transfer from iPhone didn’t transfer much compared to transfer by cable.
- Gmail app sometimes becomes unresponsive.
- Signal can’t migrate messages from one platform to another.
- I want the “always show time and info” darkened home screen to be on, but only when charging and there is no option for this.
- When the screensaver feature is on, sometimes picking up the phone and unlocking it will present a blank screen.
- No option to completely disable mobile data for an app like iOS has. Only “background data.”
- A notification suggested I tap to set up “Flip to Shhh” I tapped it. Nothing happened.
- Some apps can’t access USB storage.
- Unable to use the file manager to copy saved games from RetroArch to Lemuroid.
- Gnome’s Nautilus file manager crashes often when accessing Android storage via USB.
- Sometimes pressing play on the media player in the lockscreen does not resume playback.
- Swiping up to go home can put an app in a different state than swiping up and holding to switch directly to another app.
- You can set a custom sound for each type of alert, but there are so many types of alerts for each app that it’s tedious to do.
- Default home screen will not allow removal of the Google search bar or the “at a glance” widget.
- Lawnchair seems like the nicest FOSS home screen, but no recent version is in F-Droid or the Play Store.
- The audio and visual cues which indicate a wireless charger is successfully connected do not always activate.
- Swiping up for the home screen and quickly re-opening the settings app can result in a black screen.
Most of these issues have some kind of work-around, but the inability to migrate my Signal message history is something I can’t fix.
